A small or low-resolution image does not necessarily have to limit the size of the final printed artwork.
At Fine Art Print Valencia, we have developed our own AI image upscaling system, specifically designed to prepare photographs and visual artworks for Fine Art printing and large-format printing.
The aim is not simply to make an image larger. We analyse the file, the intended print size and the available image quality to determine how far it can be enlarged while maintaining a natural appearance and a result suitable for professional printing.

Enlarge photographs while maintaining the best possible quality
When a photograph is significantly enlarged, problems that were barely noticeable on screen can become visible: pixelation, lack of definition, compression artefacts, noise, soft edges or loss of texture.
Our AI image upscaling system allows us to increase image resolution and optimise detail in a controlled way, with the aim of preserving a natural photographic appearance and achieving better results at larger print sizes.
There is, however, an important limitation: artificial intelligence can interpret and reconstruct information, but it cannot reliably recover details that were never present in the original file.
For this reason, we do not promise unlimited enlargement. We assess each image according to the quality we want to achieve in the final print.
From a low-resolution image to a large-format print
Many of the images we want to print today were never originally created for large-scale printing.
Photographs taken with mobile phones or older cameras, scanned photographs, compressed files, images sourced from the Internet or social media, and even AI-generated images may not contain enough resolution for the desired print size.
A photograph can look perfectly good on a screen and still not contain enough pixels to be printed at 70 × 100 cm, 100 × 140 cm or larger sizes with the expected quality.
For this reason, we analyse the available resolution in relation to the final print size and determine what level of enlargement is reasonable.
The question is not simply how much we can enlarge a file, but how large we can print it while maintaining appropriate visual quality.
How do we enlarge an image with artificial intelligence?
We have developed our own tool specifically adapted to our high-resolution image preparation workflow for printing.
Our system allows us to enlarge and optimise each file individually, controlling aspects related to definition, reconstruction and final image quality.
The result is visually inspected before the final file is prepared for printing.
In this way, artificial intelligence does not replace professional judgement: it becomes another tool within the artwork preparation process.
Preparing images at 300 ppi for printing
One of the most common misconceptions is that changing an image from 72 ppi to 300 ppi or 300 dpi automatically increases its quality. It does not.
What really matters is the relationship between the number of available pixels, image resolution and physical print size.
When a file does not contain enough pixels for the requested dimensions, we can use artificial intelligence and super-resolution to generate a higher-resolution image and prepare it for printing.
In large-format printing, it is also not always necessary to work at exactly 300 ppi. The appropriate resolution depends on the size of the artwork, the characteristics of the image, the printing process and the distance from which the finished print will be viewed.
For this reason, we prefer to calculate the requirements of each image individually rather than automatically applying a fixed resolution.
Our own technology for preparing high-resolution images
Rather than relying exclusively on automated online image enlargement services, we have developed a tool integrated into our own Fine Art and large-format printing workflow.
This allows us to adapt the processing to the characteristics of each file and, most importantly, evaluate the result with the final print in mind.
Our objective is not simply to generate more pixels. It is to prepare an image that can be reproduced at the requested size while achieving the best possible balance between definition, natural appearance and print quality.
Each result can be carefully inspected before deciding whether it is suitable for the artwork being produced.
How much can an image be enlarged?
It depends on the original file and the size at which you want to print it. There is no single enlargement percentage that works equally well for every image.
A sharp, lightly compressed image containing good original information may allow considerable enlargement. A very small file that is blurred, noisy or heavily compressed will contain less usable information and therefore have greater limitations.
The content of the image, the level of detail and the intended viewing distance of the final print also make a difference.
With some files, we can achieve enlargements several times the original dimensions with very good results. In other cases, we may recommend a smaller print size in order to preserve image quality.
That is why, before determining how much an image can be enlarged, we prefer to see the original file.
Does your image have enough resolution for printing?
If you have a small, old or low-resolution photograph that you would like to print at a large size, send us the file before proceeding with the print.
Please also tell us the size at which you would like to print it.
We will assess the resolution and quality of the original file, the requested dimensions and the amount of enlargement required to determine what result can realistically be achieved.
Always send us the original file at the highest resolution available, without reducing its size, taking a screenshot or recompressing it.
From there, we can recommend the print size and treatment that offer the best balance between resolution, detail and print quality.
